Last time i talked about the Silva v. Irvin card, which i think isnt bad with a few surprising matchups and unknowns. about your average free card. Now i wanna talk about the upcomming pay per view. Seek and Destroy with the headliner GSP vs. Jon Fitch.
The four fights that wont be broadcast being major undercard fights arent anything to be bummin about.
Ben Saunders who was my pick to win the last ultimate fighter behind Kopenhaver (Bad picks on my part) is meeting up with the overated Jared Rollens. Ok ultimate fighter fight dont look too much into it i really think this is gonna be a test fight to see who will stay in the show.
Chris Wilson meets Steve Bruno, uhh a fighter who has one loss in the UFC against a nobody? not a big fight.
Chiek Kongo vs. Dan Evensen. Okay an overrated Kongo, taking on a no name basically to get his feet back on the ground and get some confidence back. I think they overhyped a guy who's ground game is fairly weak and unexciting. If you need an example check out his fight with assuerio silva, Silva held him down for three rounds using lay and pray tactics and Kongo had no answer. he the fight in a decision based on strikes but nothing really impressive. he came back to beat Mirco Cro Cop in a subpar striking battle in my opinion but it wasnt anything to talk about and when he went toe to toe against Heath Hearing he got murdered. not the biggest fight by far
Luke Cumo vs. Tamada McCroy. uhhhh ya, I think inconstant is the name of the game here. both fighters are at 500 as far as wins and losses. Cummo is the bigger dissapointment in my opinion. He showed flashes of great striking and decent ground game. But after three fights of getting dominated and his inability to finish fights. there is nothing spectacular about this guy except his underachieving personality. A loss to Stevenson was more than understandable, great fighter and one of the best at 155, but to Jonathan Goulet is just an overrated nobody who's biggest win is Kuniyoshi Hironaka. I'm sorry Luke either cut weight or get some better strategy. McCroy is nothing exciting either with a name like 'the barn cat' how can you take him seriously? he has an impressive record but his fighting is spotty at best with only a win against the always disapointing pete spratt i dont think hes bound for title contention anytime soon.
Moving on, Jason McDonald vs. Damien Maia. Okay this one should be interesting. With McDonald and Maia both sporting good records in the Octagon it should be good. both of thier main strengths seem to be thier ground game despite McDonald seeming to have great clinch work. McDonald was an up and commer with big wins over Leben and Herman. However he hit a brick wall named Rich Franklin and let me say thats a big wall. He got another win but met up with Yushin Okami. Another Big Brick wall. Now with a win over the spotty Joe Doerkskin he is tested with the picture perfect Maia. Maia on the otherhand riding the wave of victory has nothing to lose and everything to gain by beating the 'Athlete'. if it does go to the ground i have to give the edge to Maia who has back to back submission victories but i believe the athlete will be hard to submit.
Manny Gamburian vs. Rob Emerson. Okay this is quick and simple since Manny hurt his shoulder in the finale it seems like the UFC dropped him in a closet somewhere not giving him the spotlight. But now with two sub wins back to back he is thrown back onto the main card taking on the unimpressive Emerson. Okay I dont dislike Emerson but he hasnt shown me anything to get excitied about. he is decently well rounded but his strength seems to be kickboxing and no one respects it. So i think Manny will take him down ground and pound a bit and submit him. Boom, Boom, Boom. game over.
Okay moving on to what i think is the joke of the night. Brock Lesnar meets with Heath Herring. The Texas Crazy Horse lost a bout to the current heavyweight champ Antonio Nogeria. The biggest mistake was getting off of the jiu-jitsu ace after obviously holdiung the key to victory after a big head kick. Lesnar is a former pro wrestler who may or may not be the real deal. he took on Frank Mir who i think is not anywhere near his best since his mortorcylce accident. Mir submitted him in the first round. the only thing i have to say about Lesnar that impressed me was a good powerful takedown. but if you have a good takedown you gotta have excellent submission defense. its just that simple. he stopped one armbar attempt and a triangle attempt before getting caught in Mir's leglock. Now rather than take a warmup fight he is gonna take on one of the best in the heavyweight division? I'll give him points for gonads. However Heath wont back down from Lesnar's striking or Ground and pound which seemed a bit mediocre. rather than posturing up and dropping big bombs he seemed to hit as many short shots as possible with absolutely no technique. Herring should make short work of Lesnar and i think that will make Brock take another look at how his fightplans are. Now perhaps Lesnar has got a new gameplan and has worked more on his striking and submission defense i dont know but after going on record as to saying he doesnt feel he lost that last fight because he was submitted i doubt it. The biggest thing he has to realize is submissions will beat you the same as a KO that's why the Gracies domminated for as long as they did. Herring should take this one with his invigoratted training and new focus for the world title.
okay away from that on to the fight i am loooking most forard to! Roger Huerta vs. Kenny Florian!
HELLLS YES!!!
Okay these are two of my favorite fighters. both have great standup and great groundwork. Huerta who has done nothing but impress me with his crazy pressuring style and his come from behind finish against guida is knocking on BJ Penn's door and asking for the belt. Florian who has reinvented himself since the Sherk Loss shows four straight victories as well as four straight finishes three before the third round. each time he fights he gets better with his standup and his groundwork. his elbows are vicious and sumbissions deadly. Huerta has heart though my god you could hit that guy with a truck and he'd get up just so he could hit the truck back. Even with the Sherk Loss his record is 6-1 in his weight class and each win by a finish, his one loss was by decision. So I can't see Huerta finishing Florian however I thought the same thing against Clay Guida and he showed a completely new level in the third round that i had not seen from him before. The Sky is the limit for 'El Matador' plus get this HES ONLY 25!!! where as florian is in his prime at 32. I think Florian realizes if he doesnt get the title this time it could be his last time unless he pulls a Coture and just never fuckin ages. This will be a blockbuster and i am not going to make the mistake of picking one guy to win this fight cuz i just dont fuckin know!
okay onto the main event George 'Rush' St. Pierre meets the number 1 contender Jon Fitch, My only question is What took so long? Jon Fitch has 8 wins in a row including victories over Sanchez, Alves, Burkman, and Carniero. he has been knocking on the door for a while now and finally after the Serra, Hughes fiasco Rush is ready to answer. Fitch may be the biggest challenge to date against St. Pierre considering none of his opponents with the possible exception of Josh Koscheck is this athletic. Not saying his other opponents werent good but i dont think any of them really have the speed or endurance of Fitch. This may be the best way to test Rush though. when put against Serra he made the biggest mistake any fighter can make. he underestimated his opponent. He has since recovered with three big W's and taking the belt back. I doubt St. Pierre will make the same mistake against Fitch and make him work for every round however I dont think we've seen the best Rush yet considering he hasnt been pushed past round 3 yet in his 4 title matches with his record at 2-2. I think Rush tends to break his 500 title match record with an excellent battle against the always potent Jon Fitch. Check out UFC 87 its worth watching.
